Specialty Shop Retailing – Book Review

by Susan Ritchie on May 14, 2010

Specialty Shop Retailing by Carol Schroeder is a MUST READ for any apparel decorator considering or having a store front. For those wishing to open a retail store, the format of this book is sequential, covering every aspect of a retail sales location. There is a three month planning or “to do” guide which takes you through the stages of opening. The book is organized in sections, allowing the reader to select the areas which are of interest. A fast read of sections that the reader is comfortable with is still likely to bring forth new insights.

Schroeder even covers how to manage change in the cash register by “buying” money from the change box with money from the till. She talks about coding categories of inventory so that you can track the levels of profit from different products. There are sample charts and forms sprinkled throughout the book for your use. No area of shop keeping is left untouched. Business insurance, employee selection and grooming, establishing your company culture to marketing and promotion are all covered as well as with much more.

This is an enjoyable foundation book for all retailers… Well worth the read!
